Hybrid Immediate Start
Turn data into real decisions. Shape strategy. Influence outcomes.
We have two roles — one permanent, one contract (to accelerate delivery). Both require the same capabilities. This description outlines the permanent position.
This is not a pipeline-and-walk-away role. We're looking for a Senior Data Engineer who moves seamlessly from architecture to insight, from engineering to influence, someone who builds data environments that drive real decisions at senior levels, and who partners with people as naturally as they work with systems.
The Opportunity
You'll take ownership of a growing data environment, designing, building, and continuously improving a modern data platform that enables smarter, faster, and more confident decision-making across the business. Your work will be visible, valued, and acted on at the leadership level.
Critically, we're starting from a low base. There's no mature reporting layer waiting for you. You'll be the person who decides what gets built first, why, and how it connects to what comes next.
What You'll Actually Be Doing
Building from the ground up
When you arrive, there won't be an existing reporting layer to optimise. You'll need to assess the landscape, determine what data matters most to the business right now, and make a clear call on where to start. Do you prioritise a foundational ingestion layer? A quick-win dashboard that earns trust? A governance framework that prevents future pain? We'll want to know how you think through that decision.
Designing and owning end-to-end pipelines
You'll personally design and build ingestion pipelines not hand off specs to others. That means handling failure modes, retry logic, and schema evolution from day one. When something breaks at 2am (and it will), you'll have built it well enough that it recovers gracefully or alerts the right people clearly.
Orchestration that scales
You'll implement orchestration patterns that reflect how the business actually operates, dependency management, scheduling, monitoring, alerting. Not orchestration for its own sake, but patterns that solve real operational problems and can grow with the platform.
Building for others, not just yourself
A platform is only valuable if others can safely build on it. You'll design systems with guardrails clear contracts, tested layers, documentation that empowers analysts and engineers to move fast without breaking things. You know the difference between building a platform and building a personal codebase.
Turning data into decisions
Bringing multiple data sources into a single source of truth
Translating data into clear insights and recommendations for leadership
Applying analytics and predictive modelling to guide future direction
Creating visualisations and reporting that non-technical stakeholders genuinely use
Embedding data governance, security, and privacy best practices including Zero Trust principles
Driving continuous improvement across tools, processes, and data capability
What Sets This Role Apart
Real ownership — not just execution. Your decisions will shape the platform's direction, not just its delivery.
Direct line between your work and strategic outcomes
High-level stakeholder engagement from day one you'll present to and influence senior leaders
An opportunity to design a fit-for-purpose, future-ready platform from an early stage
A business that values data-driven thinking and is ready to invest in it
What You'll Bring
Technical capability
Proven, hands-on experience across data engineering, analysis, and visualisation
Strong understanding of data architecture and pipeline design (ETL/ELT)
Experience building end-to-end pipelines that handle failure, retries, and schema changes in production
Ability to implement orchestration patterns that solve real operational problems not just textbook patterns
Experience designing platforms that other engineers and analysts can safely build on
Knowledge of data security, governance, and privacy frameworks
Exposure to modern data platforms ideally the Microsoft ecosystem, bonus if you have worked with Fabric, OneLake, Estuary
Mindset and influence
Ability to translate data into commercial or operational insight not just metrics
Confidence engaging with and influencing senior stakeholders
High attention to detail paired with a strong sense of business impact
A collaborative mindset — someone who builds relationships and capability, not silos
Commercially aware: you understand why data matters, not just how
The Fit We're Looking For
We're not just hiring for skills we're hiring for how you think and how you work with others.
Curious, analytical, and forward-thinking
Comfortable operating across technical and non-technical spaces
Willing to challenge, influence, and add value beyond your immediate brief
Someone who lifts the capability of those around them while delivering their own outcomes
A person who can be dropped into ambiguity, orient quickly, and build something meaningful
What's on Offer
Permanent role
Very attractive remuneration package
Health insurance
Buying privileges
Flexibility and autonomy in how you operate
Contract role
Excellent daily/hourly rate
Immediate start, focused on accelerating platform implementation
